Air Optix Aqua, silicone hydrogel contact lenses

These advanced silicone hydrogel monthly lenses from the manufacturer Alcon allow the flow of up to five times more oxygen than conventional contact lenses. A special surface treatment ensures a very smooth exterior that effectively prevents the adherence of dirt. This type of lens is a proven concept and was already introduced to the market in 1999 as the PureVision lens by Bausch & Lomb.

The Air Optix contact lenses by Alcon (formerly Ciba Vision) have been on the market for many years. Ciba Vision introduced this silicone hydrogel lens in Mexico around the year 2000. This series of lenses under the brand name "Air Optix Aqua" consists basically of monthly lenses.

In short, a little history:

This lens is first placed on the market as O2Optix for a short time, which had something to do with its name. So the lens soon returned, but under the name Air Optix. The Air Optix is an advanced monthly lens based on the material "silicone hydrogel". Its production process is a long-term proven concept. The first lens of this type was the PureVision from Bausch & Lomb from 1999, but it was only around 2005 that the silicone hydrogel contact lens experienced a very strong growth. This material was used, primarily, for monthly or bi-weekly lenses, but in the last two to three years there are also silicone hydrogel daily disposable contact lenses.

Very shortly after the introduction of the first Air Optix lens, Ciba Vision switched to a new high-tech manufacturing process and eventually the brand "Air Optix Aqua" emerged. The typical characteristics of this month lens is its silicone hydrogel material, which allows up to 5 times more oxygen through and with a special plasma treatment for an extremely smooth surface, which prevents the adhesion of dirt.

See below the details of all different types of lenses available under the Air Optix brand.

Air Optix for Astigmatism

These are month lenses with cylinder, also called toric lenses. These lenses were launched by Ciba Vision in the spring of 2008. Toric lenses, or in other words, cylinder lenses, have been around for a long time when it comes to glasses, but for soft contact lenses,
not so very long ago. Johnson & Johnson was the first one to put a toric contact lens on the market in 2000. Nowadays each
manufacturer has lenses with cylinder, and the development is becoming faster, even for daily lenses, with more
and more cylinder options so that the visual quality always fits well with what your eye needs.

The Air Optix for Astigmatism lens has the same qualities as the standard Air Optix Aqua that you see above, yet this lens does not have the addition "Aqua" to its name. As far as we have been able to verify, that is because this lens has to be manufactured in a different way due to its cylinder addition, through what Alcon calls "PRECISION BALANCE 8|4™ Lens Design", which ensures that the cylinders remain in the right place for optimal sharp vision.

Air Optix Night & Day Aqua

In the market since early 2009, was actually the second "silicone hydrogel" lens in the market after the introduction of the PureVision. This lens has also proven its popularity and quality.
This special monthly lens is specifically characterized by the fact that it can be worn continuously for a whole month, 24/7. The name says it all, "night & day"! This means that you do NOT have to take it off every day and clean it, which saves a lot of trouble, time and costs for lens solutions and lens cases. In addition, this lens also offers an extra Base Curve (B/C, curvature), so there are many more options for the right fit on offer.
Not everyone can tolerate a lens 24 hours a day, and it can even be bad for your eyes, so do not try this lens out of your self. Go visit your contact lens specialist first!
